INITIAL UFC 236 CARD ANNOUNCED

The UFC was extremely busy over the last week, announcing a number of new bouts for upcoming fight cards. One of those cards is UFC 236, which takes place April 13 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. Have a look at my thoughts on the main event between Max Holloway and Dustin Poirier here, and also my thoughts on the other newly-announced bouts are below.
Eryk Anders vs. Khalil Rountree, UFC 236
Added to UFC 236 is an intriguing light heavyweight bout between Eryk Anders and Khalil Rountree. Anders (11-3) is just 3-3 in the UFC and is coming off of a decision loss to Elias Theodorou. He has decided to make the move up to light heavyweight permanently and not cutting all that burden should help . Rountree (7-3, 1 NC) is currently 3-3, 1 NC in the UFC and is coming from a KO loss to Johnny Walker. While Rountree has more experience fighting as a light hearted and is a proven knockout artist, I still believe in Anders and believe he has more potential than what he is shown in the UFC up to now. The opening line should be close to a Pick Celtics, however my ancient lean is towards Anders.
Paige VanZant vs. Poliana Botelho, UFC 236
Women’s flyweights Paige VanZant and Poliana Botelho will clash at this event. VanZant (8-4) is 5-3 at the UFC and is coming off of a submission win over Rachael Ostovich. Botelho (7-2) is 2-1 at the UFC but lost by entry to Cynthia Calvillo in her last struggle. I would undoubtedly prefer VanZant to get the win and predicated on her fame that I wouldn’t be surprised if the line was massively skewed in her favor.
Wilson Reis vs. Alexandre Pantoja, UFC 236
At a rare flyweight fight, Wilson Reis takes on Alexandre Pantoja. Reis (23-9) is 7-5 in the UFC and conquered Ben Nguyen by decision in his final bout. Pantoja (20-3) is 4-1 at the UFC and is coming off of two straight wins over Brandon Moreno and Ulka Sasaki. Reis is a good veteran but all the upside is with Pantoja and that I expect him to be a small popular at open. Expect the failure of the fight to be released because the UFC cuts virtually every flyweight coming off of a loss.
Ovince Saint-Preux vs. Nikita Krylov, UFC 236
In a rematch nobody asked , Ovince Saint-Preux takes on Nikita Krylov at a light heavyweight bout. St-Preux (23-12) is 11-7 in the UFC and is coming from a decision loss to Dominick Reyes. He’s a gatekeeper at 205lbs and is no more a true title contender. Krylov (24-6) is 6-4 at the UFC and has been submitted by Jan Blachowicz in his final bout. OSP and Krylov previously met at UFC 171 in 2014, with OSP winning by entry. I’m not exactly sure why the UFC believed this rematch was necessary, but given how their initial fight went and how bad Krylov’s submission defense is, I would prefer OSP to beat him again.
Montel Jackson vs. Andre Soukhamthath, UFC 236
And finally, bantamweights Montel Jackson and Andre Soukhamthath meet. Jackson (7-1) chose to Ricky Simon in his UFC debut but bounced back well with a submission win over Brian Kelleher. Soukhamthath (13-6) is only 2-3 in the UFC but beat Jonathan Martinez by choice in his last struggle. Soukhamthath is too inconsistent to trust, and that I expect Jackson to be preferred here.

Detroit Pistons: 200-1

Consider the Detroit Pistons, if you’re searching for an Eastern Conference team which may make an important leap up the standings.
Although Detroit yields the vast majority of a roster which won only 29 games a year ago (plus Jodie Meeks, D.J. Augustin and Caron Butler), Stan Van Gundy’s advent as commanding officer will add structure and discipline.
We understand SVG wins where he goes and he sees a way by matching playing style to succeed. It is him, if anybody can sort out the frontcourt mess and backcourt ineptitude in Detroit.
That is not to say there will not be significant hurdles, based on Zach Lowe of Grantland.com:”Stan Van Gundy is a top-five coach. This team will be frisky, however the Brandon Jennings–Josh Smith combination–even when they play fewer minutes together–has reached’do not trust until you see them perform good basketball things standing.’”
Smith and Jennings are commodities that are harmful . Both can take their team from games if not handled. For the Pistons Van Gundy will have to rein both while also getting more from the rest of the roster–Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond that is man-child particularly.
If Drummond gives Van Gundy a passable Dwight Howard impersonation (circa 2009), this group will be in company. And by business, I mean someplace at or marginally above .500.
Let’s not get crazy.

LOSER GOES HOME: BRANDON THATCH VS ERICK SILVA RUMORED FOR SEPTEMBER

In an interview with MMA OddsBreaker’s James Lynch, UFC welterweight Bojan Velickovic revealed his training partner, former RFA welterweight champion Brandon”Ruckus” Thatch has been reserved to carry on Brazil’s Erick Silva. There is no official date and place for its struggle booking, and the bout has not been formally announced, but Velickovic did state that it is in September, so one would suppose that could be September 24th’s UFC Fight Night 95 in Silva’s garden of Brasilia, Brazil. The two 170-pounders have their backs against the wall heading into this contest, as Thatch is coming off three straight losses, being finished by rear naked choke submission in all three of them, and Silva is coming off a pair of defeats himself, most recently a vicious knockout in the hands of Nordine Taleb. This is a small surprise match-up, as most guessed there was a decent chance both welterweights are getting their walking papers from the advertising following their most recent outings inside the Octagon. The UFC has decided that one of them must stick about, and at a marketing where some fighters get cut after just one loss, these welterweights are very lucky. The two Thatch and Silva have appeared to be about a decline in recent bouts, so it’s going to be interesting to see how they will look against each other once they square off this September. 1 fighter’s UFC narrative will last, while the one who tastes conquer will likely be inching closer to some Bellator contract, as it would likely serve him better to hang up the gloves for good. Silva stands from Kings MMA at Huntington Beach, CA under the tutelage of Master Rafael Cordeiro. Thatch and Velickovic struggle from Evolution Fight Team at Denver, CO.. Velickovic confronted former American Top Team training spouse Michael Graves at the featured bout for the UFC Fight Pass prelims for UFC 201 last evening with his bout resulting in a vast majority draw.
