Rafael Nadal defeated Marin Cilic 6-3 3-6 6-1 6-2 in a battle of the former US Open winners to secure a quarter-final spot at Flushing Meadows.
The Spaniard dropped his first set of the tournament against the 2014 winner, before agreeing to shut out a four-set success in emphatic style.
When given a moment breach because he served midway through the group, and had been broken up moments later nadal was annoyed.
Cilic levelled the contest at one but the second seed recovered beautifully – dropping three matches to establish a quarter-final showdown against Diego Schwartzman, that dumped undercover seed Alexander Zverev out.
Nadal, watched his buddy Tiger Woods on Arthur Ashe Stadium, produced a gorgeous around-the-net winner to deliver up game point and he made no mistake to clinch a place in his ninth US Open quarter-final.
“It’s an easy shot to describe, but hard to make,” said Nadal. “I don’t know, I believe I followed the ball great because he had a fantastic volley and I watched it.
“I ran fast to the ball and that I saw in the last minute there would maybe be a little space on that side.
“I think that it was the only method to win there. I struck it well, but to reach that place you will want some luck”
Nadal’s victory moves him closer to some US Open assembly against his great rival Roger Federer. They’ve never met at this particular competition, although the group have clashed 40 occasions in an iconic rivalry spanning 15 years.
Federer confronts Grigor Dimitrov at the eight and he also boasts a 100 percent record from the Bulgarian.
While trailing by two places and because of this, Federer and Nadal are highly fancied to competition his or her 10th Grand Slam on Sunday after falling from Stan Wawrinka defending champion Novak Djokovic bowed out.
