Many eyebrows Increased across the World when NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell Declared the Oakland Raiders’ Choice of Clelin Ferrell Using the No. 4 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
The Raiders, for their part, were not concerned about pre-draft projections that indicated the Clemson defensive end might happen to be available later in the process. Oakland appeared for the right fit, identified their man and caught him.
In updating the defense, new general director Mike Mayock and czar Jon Gruden looked for gamers that match defensive coordinator Paul Guenther’s scheme. The DC believes Ferrell is as successful as some of the greatest edge rushers he had during his stint with the Cincinnati Bengals.

“Clelin is exactly what I’m searching for,” Guenther said recently, through NBC Sports Bay Area. “That’s the kind of men we had. The Michael Johnson’s and the Carlos Dunlap’s we needed in Cincinnati that are every-down ends, that are large men that can either hurry and play the run. So he is exactly what we are looking for.”
Playing in Cincinnati, Dunlap is one of the very underrated pass rushers in the NFL. The picture of the dude would be about multiple cereal boxes, if he wore a star on his helmet. Despite turning 30, Dunlap still creates boatloads of stress, making at least 7.5 sacks each of the previous six seasons. The edge rusher owns the most sacks in Bengals history with 72.5 since the league started counting the statistic in 1982 (he would allegedly be instant if you went back and counted Eddie Edwards’ sacks before that date). Dunlap enjoyed his finest seasons making Pro Bowl bids in 2016 and 2015. Johnson also enjoyed several successful seasons under Guenther and generated 44.5 sacks for his career, though his production has trailed of late.
Obviously if Ferrell turns out to be a Dunlap-type border rusher, the Raiders would be very delighted with the pick.
The rookie brings a toolbox which may not blow scouts away, but is consistently good in every area. Raiders linebacker Vontaze Burfict, a former teammate of both Dunlap and Johnson, agrees that the comparisons are apt.
“Oh yeah,” Burfict said. “He’s a beginner but I swear he has been like five years. Doesn’t behave like a rookie at all. He’s in prepared to manage business, he’s a leader in the huddle, actually only cheering up guys, telling them,’Let us complete off the period.’ And that is a lot coming from a rookie because when I was a rookie I didn’t want to mention much, I just wanted to go out there and do my job, so coming from him and he is a defensive end and I give him a difference call or whatever kind of call I give him, he knows it, so that’s enormous.”
Ferrell’s wisdom, leadership and consistency were all reasons the Raiders were comfy making him a high selection. Perception be damned.
