Multiple Paralympic swimming champion Jessica Long states her motivation has been affected by changes to the game’s classification system.
International Paralympic Committee (IPC) rules require all rivals to undergo global classification prior to the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.
Some athletes have been moved into the S8 class of the 27-year-old American, which makes her competition.
“It breaks my heart, having been an S8 my whole life,” Long told BBC Sport.
“The thing everybody must realise is that it impacts another generation and that’s so sad.
“I’ve trained so hard to be where I am at – that I train with Olympic athletes and if I’m trying hard to reach the top then there’s something wrong.”
Long, who was born in Siberia but adopted by an American family, had her legs amputated when she had been 18-months-old as a consequence of a birth defect.
She made her debut when she won three gold awards, aged 12 in Athens in 2004.
She has since been a force in her class, becoming one of this sport’s faces and winning names.
She gets and she’s motivated by the fluctuations in the sport while she acknowledges that this week’s Para-swimming World Championships haven’t been her focus.
“There are items outside of my hands and that fuels my fire,” she confessed.
