Rory McIlroy has shown after being unable to perform the number of events he negotiated a deal with the European Union to retain his membership.
McIlroy’s choice to overlook that the Open appeared likely to charge him his Tour card as regulations say he would have to add two events to his own agenda by choosing not to liven in his house .
But, because of the hectic PGA Tour schedule of McIlroy, he wasn’t able to match his Tour requirements prior to striking a bargain with European Tour chief executive Keith Pelley, that asked him to play this year.
The deal was agreed by McIlroy and passed on by the European Tour committee, so having already played in the Open, he will include in the week’s BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth before creating the season-ending DP World Tour Championship his third and closing Rolex Series start – assuming that he is one of the top 60 in the Race to Dubai.
McIlroy is coming out of a rest following a spell of seven championship in eight weeks, but he admitted that he had been talked out of which makes it , a break and persuaded to come by his wife to Wentworth – .
“My wife explained ,’what exactly are you attempting to do, or what type of point are you trying to make?’ My thing wasI knew that I wasn’t going to play with The Irish Open, and the principle was that you have to play with an additional two events if you don’t play your home Open.
“So Keith Pelley and that I sat down and I said,’Keith, I can’t possibly do so, you can not ask me to’. So where rather than playing with two extra, you need to play three of these Rolex Series events a 29, Keith came straight back to me and indicated a compromise. And I said,’Done, 100 percent performed’. It was fine once we had that dialogue.
“Look, I really don’t need to try and make The European Tour bend the rules for me personally in any way, but I only believe we are trying our best over on the opposite side of the pond, we’re trying our best over here, and only wanted to come to some type of compromise in which we all felt comfortable that we can compete on both excursions.
“I think that has been fair, which has been a reasonable deal in the end.”
McIlroy, who insisted that he will play in next year’s Irish Open, also hit out at the pace of play last week’s Solheim Cup and revealed his calls for more severe punishments for repeat offenders, something that could be understood in Wentworth this week using a time tested method being trialled as part of the European Tour’s four-point strategy to fight slow drama.
Timing clocks on specific tees around the West Course will help every group in deciding whether they are out of place or not, also McIlroy said:”I think it’s a beginning. Look, it is not a excellent thing for our match.
“I really don’t wish to single out specific individuals, but I watched a lot of the Solheim Cup at the weekend, and it was really slow. As much as you need to sit and watch and support the girls that are European, like it is just hard not to get frustrated with it.
“I am a fan of golf, and now I want the best for the sport, so something has to be accomplished. Since there are situations where you need to take your time, it’s hard, and they’d conditions that are tough up there at Gleneagles.
“However, something has to be done, and if you consider the US Open tennis final, Rafa Nadal acquired a time clock violation on a very large serve like in the conclusion of this final, so when they can do it afterward, there is no reason why we can not do it in our tournaments, either. So it is just an issue of implementing it being consistent with it.”
