New Zealand vs Ireland
World Cup
11:15am Saturday October
New Zealand set a Rugby World Cup semi-final clash with England up following a persuasive win over Ireland at Tokyo.
The haka was fulfilled by a rendition of the Fields of Athenry but was as good as it got for Ireland who had no reply to the screen from New Zealand.
The All Blacks were in their clinical greatest using Aaron Smith scoring two tries and Beauden Barrett, Codie Taylor, Matt Todd, George Bridge, along with Jordie Barrett moving over. Richie Mounga weighed against all the boot adding four conversions and a penalty to establish a date with England in Tokyo.
A try from Robbie Henshaw plus a punishment attempt did provide Ireland something about the scoreboard but they had been beaten in every facet on the afternoon.
It ended up being a lesson in chunk retention and handling since the All Blacks demonstrated their goal by stretching Irelands defence by the start.
New Zealands first try came in the 11th minute after some tough carries in the big men in distance being created by the defenders sucked. In the ruck, Smith took full advantage over and seen acres of space. Mounga added a previous punishment and the conversion to make it 10-0.
Smith scored his second after wingers Sevu Reece and George Bridge combined into space to race. Once more although bridge was pulled Smiths eye to the gap was spot on and he burrowed over from close range. Mounga added that the conversion and Ireland were 17-0 down after 21 seconds.
Ten minutes later the All Blacks had his third after the chunk was dislodged by a tackle from Reece around Johnny Sexton – Mounga hoofed it downfield and Beauden Barrett chased it down after referring it up the TMO to score which was given.
Ireland had their best chance of scoring with. A punishment for an the ball off tackle was reversed following replays revealed Peter OMahony hitting at the ruck with the elbow as well as the All Blacks went into the break with a healthful lead.
It was more of the exact same at the moment as New Zealand continued to turn the screw and played the game in the appropriate locations. Ireland lived off scraps and couldnt hold onto the ball.
By Kieran Read together with Moungas transformation making it 29-0 hooker Taylor watched their fourth.
Following a driving maul splintered the kick and the Ireland bunch was plucked from the air by Reece that was hauled down inches short, however a recycle and Todd pushed matt Todd made it five.
Ireland finally got onto the scoreboard in the 65th minute when Henshaw powered finished after a haul from CJ Stander – after hed knocked on over the line minutes before the centre alleviated.
But, New Zealand werent done yet as Bridge touched after a nice and, despite going down to 14-men and devoting a penalty try on, they rounded off proceedings when Jordie Barrett crossed in the final minute.
The handling of new Zealand was from the world and their desire to keep the ball alive was exceptionally entertaining. Their patience also caught the eye and added into their clinical display. A clean bill of health will be a major positive for the guys in black.
Ireland appeared compared to New Zealand and fought to create their mark around the game. They had been guilty. Defence was left wanting – given the All Black machine put under the pump them – however overlooking 29 tackles at a World Cup semi-final is simply not good enough.
For New Zealand, well 12 penalties were conceded by them – Ireland permit them off the hook with poor game management, but England will surely make them cover any indiscretions.
