Somerset’s Tom Banton has since won the August PCA Player of the Month award after an month that saw him score his maiden T20 century.
Banton was the obvious winner with 53 percent of the people vote, ahead of team-mate Tom Abell (22 per cent) Yorkshire’s Adam Lyth (13 per cent) and Derbyshire’s Wayne Madsen (12 percent ).
Together using all the nominees scoring more MVP points than anybody else in August, the PCA’s Most Valuable Player Rankings had selected the four-man Song.
Fans who voted through the PCA along with Sky Sports websites then had the final state, with Banton getting the fifth distinct participant to win the award this year, following Liam Dawson in April,” Simon Harmer in May, Hassan Azad in June and Ravi Ashwin at July.
“It is certainly a very special moment. It’s always good to see my name join a record of these gifted players,” explained Banton, 20.
Although Craig Overton along with Somerset duo Lewis Gregory are flying high in the MVP, banton was nominated for the award alongside Abell.
“It is brilliant having such wonderful players around you. They’ve helped me much as I’ve come into the team which is fine for me being a kid and now being in my first season.”
For Banton, the month found him score 428 runs at an average of 38.9 over both formats together using his emphasize definitely his eponymous T20 hundred against Kent at Taunton.
“I’ve never felt enthusiasm like it was a bit crazy to be frank. I struggled to sleep soundly for the next few nights that I presume was still due to the excitement.”
Banton’s batting exploits watched him accrue 116.31 MVP points for the month because discipline alone – more than any other player.
Although Somerset only missed out on a Blast sought the medial side young wicketkeeper-batsman has set his sights on success this season.
He explained:”The goal is to attempt to win the upcoming few matches and lift the Specsavers County Championship title at our home ground in September. That might be the fantasy and that’s what everyone here at Taunton wants.
“If I scored a hundred from the Championship then I would be the youngest participant to get one in each of the major competitions [overtaking Jason Roy], so personally I want to do that. But the chief thing is merely to try and keep winning matches.”
Beyond that, if Banton keeps on generating this August, because he has done the inevitable questions about an England call-up will continue to be requested. On the other hand, the kid is eager to focus on the here and now.
“Obviously the England white ball group are so strong and have just come off the back of winning the World Cup. You never know, if you keep on doing then although it’s definitely going to be somewhat hard to break in that group. I’ll find that phone call.
“This season I’ve done better at white-ball cricket but I am always hoping to increase in the format also. The most important goal is definitely to play Test cricket for England but I am just hoping to remain realistic at the moment so white-ball cricket will come .”
