New Zealand vs Ireland
World Cup
11:15am Saturday October
New Zealand set a Rugby World Cup semi-final clash with England up win over Ireland at Tokyo.
A rendition of these Fields of Athenry met the haka but that was as good as it made for Ireland who had no reply to the rapid screen.
The All Blacks were in their clinical best using Aaron Smith scoring two tries and Beauden Barrett, Codie Taylor, Matt Todd, George Bridge, and Jordie Barrett also going over. Richie Mounga weighed against all the boot comprising four conversions and a penalty to prepare a date with England in Tokyo.
A try from Robbie Henshaw and a penalty try did give Ireland something on the scoreboard but they have been well beaten in every facet on the day.
It was a lesson in handling and ball retention by stretching the defence of Ireland from the start since the All Blacks demonstrated their intent.
New Zealands first try came in the 11th minute after some hard carries from the big men from space being created by the defenders sucked. From the ruck, Smith seen acres of distance and took benefit over. Mounga included the conversion to make it 10-0.
Smith scored his second following George Bridge and wingers Sevu Reece combined to race into space. More although bridge was pulled Smiths eye for the gap was spot on and he strolled over from close variety. Mounga added Ireland and that the conversion have been 17-0 down after 21 minutes.
Following a tackle from Reece on Johnny Sexton dislodged the chunk ten minutes after the All Blacks had their third – Mounga hoofed it downfield and Beauden Barrett chased it down to score which was given after speaking it.
Ireland had their best chance of scoring with half-time fast approaching. However, a punishment for an off the ball handle following replays showed Peter OMahony hitting at against the ruck leading was reversed went with a lead that was healthy into the break.
It had been the exact same in the moment since New Zealand and the match continued to turn the screw played in the ideal areas. Ireland couldnt hold onto the ball and were living off scraps.
Hooker Taylor felt their fourth following a pop pass by Kieran Read together with the transformation of Mounga which makes it 29-0.
After a maul splintered also the next kick and the Ireland bunch was plucked from the air by Reece who had been hauled down short, however a fast recycle and Todd pushed matt Todd made it five.
Ireland finally caught onto the scoreboard in the 65th minute when Henshaw powered finished after a haul from CJ Stander – after he had knocked on over the line minutes the centre alleviated.
New Zealand werent done yet as Bridge touched down after a good offload from Dane Coles and, despite heading to 14-men and devoting a penalty try on, they rounded off proceedings when Jordie Barrett crossed in the final minute.
The handling of new Zealand was out of the world and also their desire to keep the ball alive was entertaining. Their patience in defence captured the eye and additional to their clinical display. A clean bill of health are also a positive for the men in black going into the semi-finals.
Ireland fought to create their mark around the game and appeared a lawn slower compared to New Zealand. They had been guilty of handling errors which were pounced on by the All Blacks. Irelands defence was left wanting – granted they had been placed under the pump from the All Black machine – but overlooking 29 tackles in a World Cup semi-final is simply not good enough.
For New Zealand 12 penalties were conceded by them – Ireland allow them off the hook with bad game management, but England will certainly make them pay for any indiscretions.
