Rookies keep rolling . Odell Beckham was traded away. The ranks are joined by Absolutely free brokers such as Golden Tate. The offensive line is shuffled and hopefully improved.
As the nights and days fly for the New York Giants, the 38-year-old Eli Manning has seemingly been the constant.
“You take it year by year,” Manning tells nola.com’s Rod Walker in a must-read attribute for Eli fans and critics alike. “I’ve been blessed going into my 16th year. That has been a boon in itself. I love what I am doing. I really like. You will never know when it’s going to be your final year or any time it is likely to be the end for you, so you attempt to make the most of those years you’re here and enjoy every moment.”
Fifteen NFL seasons, four Pro Bowls and two Super Bowls into a profession that some think will conclude in Canton and many others think has outstayed its welcome, Manning explains that he still feels young in regards to playing and is in no rush to hang up his cleats.
The Giants selected Duke quarterback Daniel Jones in the 2019 NFL Draft. Having drawn plenty of comparisons to Manning, Jones is set up to triumph Manning — maybe sooner than later. But it is Jones and his 2019 course of rookies, just as those before them, that seemingly inspires Manning to stay forever young under center but reminds him of his age when practices and games conclude.
“In the locker room, I think their age,” Manning said. “At 8 o’clock at night, I do not feel their era. I’m ready to go to bed and they’re just getting started rolling and rocking. I can not hang and do whatever they can do off the area. But on the field, I feel like I could still run with them and they keep me young.”
As has often been the tale told by former players, it’s the camaraderie that Manning knows he’ll miss. Mature brother Peyton, one of the greatest the game has ever seen, has imparted that wisdom . Hence, there is yet another reason Manning finds no reason to rate into the wake of his playing days.
“I’m not rushing to retirement, and Peyton’s not telling me to rush right into it,” that the Giants QB explained. “I still love being around the guys and the teammates and enjoying with this game. I’m going to play it for so long as I believe I can hang with these guys”
For the Big Blue loyal that is only concerned with transferring the franchise ahead and getting back to its winning ways, that’s also Manning’s priority and that which pushes him more than anything else. And of course that his 66 completion percentage in 2018 was the very best in his career and his 4,299 yards were his greatest since his last Pro Bowl look in 2015.
“It is such a great sense in that locker room when you win games,” he said. “You want everybody to encounter that. You need those men who haven’t won a championship to get that feeling too. That means so much for your loved ones and everybody who has been part of your soccer career, from the high school coaches to your school coaches. When you win a tournament, everybody wins.”
